porcelain_veneer_smileDo you want a more beautiful smile to address underlying issues such as cracked or stained teeth but don’t know your options? Porcelain veneers may be your answer. In many cases, they can serve as a wonderful alternative to crowns, lasting years if properly applied.

What are Veneers?

Like the name implies, veneers are a thin layer of porcelain or composite resin material applied as a top covering to the front portion of the tooth only. They are an excellent choice to cosmetically enhance your overall smile and can literally erase many years of wear and tooth discoloration with little or no anesthesia.

Those with cracked or chipped teeth can easily benefit from placement of veneers, especially to areas of the front teeth. Dr. Frank Caffaratti of Caffaratti Dental Group explains, “there are many great benefits to porcelain veneers, especially those that have superior quality and durability and are demonstrated in these porcelain veneers before and afters . For a dentist to achieve the highest quality porcelain veneer, dental crown or dental implant, they need a dental lab partner with outstanding quality standards and product material. It is really like a marriage, Dr. Caffaratti continues, it requires excellent work on the part of the dentist as well as the dental lab for the design and material construction. Having worked with multiple labs in the past, we have found partnering with Arrowhead Dental Labs provides our patients with superior and pristine products that make them very satisfied.”

Porcelain Veneer Consultation

Knowing what to expect and having a conversation with your dentist about your desired smile outcomes plays an important role in the veneer or dental implant process. There are typically up to three stages and appointments required to receive treatment.

  • Diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Preparation
  • Application and Treatment

During your initial comprehensive exam, we develop a customized cosmetic plan utilizing veneers or porcelain crowns.  You’ll leave your next appointment with a set of temporary veneers or porcelain crowns while your custom final veneers are being crafted at our specialty Arrowhead Elite Lab.

Porcelain Veneer Treatment Process

In preparation for your new veneers, the teeth are lightly buffed to remove a tiny portion allowing room for the new thickness to be applied in the form of the porcelain or resin shell. At this time, some patients may elect to have a local anesthetic if it makes them more comfortable.

Different from the porcelain veneer, the resin veneer can be completed usually in one visit. Be sure to discuss the benefits of each with your dentist so that you are well informed of the differences between resin and the porcelain ceramic material tooth covering. In this initial visit for the resin veneer, the tooth is prepared and the resin material is applied and sculpted all in the same visit.

The porcelain veneer process requires a mold of your teeth to be taken and sent to the lab for fabrication requiring a time period where your teeth will have been prepped. Prior to leaving the office, your dentist may apply a temporary veneer or covering if the teeth are too unsightly.

Once the dentist has your custom set of porcelain veneers, you will be fitted for them and allowed to view the shape, placement and color prior to permanent application. The color can still be adjusted at this visit with variation of cement shading. Once they are cemented, the shade cannot be altered.

Most patients find there is about a one to two week adjustment period to their new smile and feel of the teeth. This is normal. In order to maintain your new smile and veneers, it is important to maintain a great dental care routine of brushing and flossing daily.

Typically the last step in the veneer process would be a follow-up visit with your dentist in approximately one to two weeks after application.

What are Porcelain Veneer Results?

It is important to understand that your new veneers will be very similar to natural teeth but not identical copies. Variations in colors may be seen upon close inspection however this is not uncommon with natural teeth as well. The results are designed to make your smile more beautiful and pleasing to you as well as everyone you meet.

“I’ve been a patient of Dr Caffaratti for many years.  During that time, I’ve been repeatedly pleased with the quality of both dental care and customer service. All who I’ve interacted with are friendly and professional.  Ellyn is a rock star hygienist and the Doc has been great on the few occasions I’ve required more than a cleaning. Though I miss Sherri and Trudy at the front desk, the new ladies up front have thus far provided the same level of quality I’ve come to expect when I’m in the office. If I could, I’d add a few more stars but Yelp! only allows 5 so there you go. The waiting room is clean, comfy and welcoming.  Why wouldn’t you give this dental office a try if you are in need of a new provider?”
