Wisdom teeth are a valuable asset to the mouth when they are healthy and properly positioned. Often, however, problems develop that require wisdom teeth removal. When the jaw isn’t large enough to accommodate wisdom teeth, you can experience impacted wisdom teeth that may grow sideways, partially emerge or remain trapped beneath the gum or bone leading to wisdom teeth pain. Extraction of wisdom teeth is generally recommended when: • Wisdom teeth only partially erupt. This leaves an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and cause an infection. Wisdom teeth pain, swelling, jaw stiffness and general illness can result. • There is a chance that poorly aligned wisdom teeth will damage adjacent teeth. • A cyst (fluid-filled sac) forms, destroying surrounding structures such as bone or tooth roots. Once the determination has been made that you will a need wisdom teeth removal, Dr. Caffaratti will request to have a 3D Image taken here in our Greater Reno/Sparks Office. Onsite, we have our own NewTom Cone Beam 3D imaging machine. This alleviates the inconvenience of a referral to an outside imaging facility. Once the scan is taken it is then reviewed and examined carefully to determine what type of surgery and sedation will be necessary for you.
